The curse is over

The series of losses with Viktoria Plzeň is finally over. Sparta put on a great performance on Sunday evening, Šural and Karavaev scored the game-deciding goals in the first half.

David Bičík replaced injured Tomáš Koubek in the goal, playing for the first time since last year’s August. Bogdan Vatajelu made his Czech league debut, starting on the left wing.

Both defences created the first chances for both teams with their mistakes. Krmenčík and Lafata could open the score from breakaways, but both Bičík and Kozáčik made brilliant saves to keep the score goalless.

However, then Sparta began to increase the pace. Josef Šural opened the score with a lovely header from Lafata’s cross and Vyacheslav Karavaev added the second only five minutes later, hitting the empty net after Konaté’s cross went through the box and found Karavaev unmarked in front of the goal.

Shocked Viktoria were unable to answer, and were lucky to create their final chance of the first half, as Kovařík’s cross from a free kick bounced off the ground and hit the post.

Hrošovský’s long-range effort went just wide shortly after the break. Minutes after, Vatajelu crossed the ball from the left and Lafata hit the crossbar. It was another great performance by the players in the second half, as Sparta managed to keep the clean sheet until the final whistle.
