Sparta recorded their first loss in this season’s Europa League campaing, losing 1-2 to Villarreal.

David Lafata started on the bench, being replaced by Tiémoko Konaté up front. Mario Holek finally recovered and was ready to start the match from the very beginning.

The match started the worst way possible for Sparta, as Bičík’s attempted clearance hit Bakambu and the ball ended up in net after only three minutes of play.

Chances kept on coming, though. Gaspar sent the ball over the bar after Ruiz headed it to him after a corner. Bičík then made his first big save of the match, denying Castillejo from a close range.

Bičík made two more brilliant saves later in the first half, denying Bakambu on both occasions. First from a breakaway, then he saved Bakambu’s header after a great cross from the right.

However, it were Sparta to strike next. In the additional time of the first half, Jakub Brabec headed in a lovely taken corner by Dočkal and levelled the score!

Early in the second half, Ruiz’s header hit the bar, but Sparta managed to increase the pace and Villarreal didn’t have that much space anymore. However, the they scored the game-winner in the 63rd minute, when Bakambu netted his second of the night with a nice shot from the edge of the box.

The second leg will be played on Thursday 14/4 at Letná stadium.
